History of Flores Island

Flores, located in the province of Nusa Tenggara Timur, Indonesia. Flores belong to group of Sunda kecil Island moreover Bali and NTB. It is about 14.300 km². Flores island, Timor island, Sumba island and Alor island is the four-biggest island in NTT in which one of Indonesia province with 566 island. The wide, sum of population natural and human resources is sufficient.

Flores, the early begening from Portuguese. It is “Cabo de Flores” it’s mean “The cape Flower”. This name was given by S.M.Cabot, it was given for mention the easternmost of Flores island.then, this name used legaly since 1636 by governor-general Hindoa Belanda, Hendrik Brouwer. This name (Flores) which have been used for a long time, it is about four-centuries acually doesn’t describe the wealth of this island. Therefore, in the study of Orinbao in 1969 reveal that the real name of this island must be Nusa Nipa, mean Snake Island.

From the aspect of Antropology, this name is more suitable for that island, because containing of some purpose of philosophy, etnis, and culture citizen of Flores. The citizen of Flores indicates that this island inhabited by the kind of etnic’s group that live in the each community which most of all have the exclusive caracteristics. Surely, each ethnic have the different value and level of social-culture. (Barlow,1989; Year, 1997)

The kinds of ethnic in Flores reflected in the weave which develop by every ethnic. The weave hires for each generation. Woven fabric indicates someone origion or ethnic, they will be pround for using the woven fabric from their ethnic. The pattern and motive have thier own meaning. For the example. The pattern of horse, shrimp, dragon, lion, tree, etc it’s indicates from East Sumba.
